A nine-time Grammy Award winner, pianist Eddie Palmieri is a National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master and bandleader from Puerto Rico, best known for combining jazz piano and instrumental solos with Latin rhythms. Jazz trumpeter/composer and bandleader Brian Lynch is also a Grammy Award winner who is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods and with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Heritage Film Festival: KoAloha ‘Ukulele Story

This animated documentary details the creation of the KoAloha ‘Ukulele Company and chronicles the life events of Alvin Okami, an O‘ahu based entertainer turned inventor. Directed by Gary San Angel and animated by Rocky Kev, the film was winner of the Golden Kahuna Award at the 2009 Honolulu International Film Festival. A Q&A session with the director will follow the screening.

Enjoy a relaxed afternoon of island music with highly-acclaimed musicians, celebrating Hawai‘i’s beloved instrument. Renowned ‘ukulele advocate and teacher Roy Sakuma will serve as M.C. Popular ‘ukulele musicians who are scheduled to perform this year include: Ohta-san with Nando Suan, Kamakakehau Fernandez, The Hula Honeys, Aidan James, Ka‘ala Cormack & J-Town Hui, Honey Bun & The Coconuts, Daniel & Nelly Toyama Baduria, Nick Acosta, Tamlyn Tamura, Seabury Hall Hawaiian Ensemble, and Kalama Intermediate School ‘Ukulele Band. One of Hawaiian music’s most gifted vocalists, Martin Pahinui has performed with a host of top artists, including his father’s legendary Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band, The Peter Moon Band, and slack key super group Hui Aloha. As Slack Key Masters’ guest artist, Martin shares his aloha for the traditional sound with classic tunes full of slack key, steel guitar and a passionate voice that expresses the essence of Hawaiian soul and harkens back to the glory days of Hawaiian music greats like his mentors: Gabby Pahinui, Atta Isaacs and Sonny Chillingworth. Lecture presentations are from 10 am to 12 pm each day at MACC. After lunch in the courtyard, the event moves across the street to UH Maui College campus from 1 to 3 pm for studio demonstrations, followed by a Q&A session.

Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriters Donald Fagen of Steely Dan fame, Michael McDonald, solo artist and formerly with The Doobie Brothers, and legendary front-man Boz Scaggs will join forces and hit the stage as The Dukes of September Rhythm Revue. They are performing together in Hawai‘i for the first time with their nine-piece ensemble band.

Angkor Wat Film Festival: Years of Darkness

The mission of the ANGKOR WAT INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (AWIFF) is to showcase and celebrate films whose subjects and themes deal with the preservation of culture and environment. These are the best of the festival and proceeds will help fund the 2nd annual AWIFF in Cambodia. Years of Darkness documents Sam Khong’s reunification with his family and his spiritual recovery. He grew up in Cambodia and joined its Navy at age 14 to fight the Vietcong. In 1974, he came to the U.S. for additional military training. But in 1975 he was stranded here when the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia and began its regime of death. Later, while living in the U.S., Khong suffered a head injury that led to the start of his battle with depression. Directed by Tom Vendetti. Short film: Born Sweet

Ready Made is a documentary about two ordinary individuals who have a physical likeness to Mao and choose to be his impersonators. As a result, their lives and destinies changed. Mohala Mai 2012 - Fundraiser for Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka

Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka under the direction of nā kumu hula, Nāpua Makua and Kahulu Maluo, will perform their annual hō‘ike and fundraiser in an evening filled with inspiring traditional and contemporary hula, oli (chant) and mele (song). The award winning hālau shares the stage with Hawai‘i’s finest musical groups and solo artists, such as Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winners, Hi‘ikua and Weldon Kekauoha, as they meld melodic voices, graceful hula and the imagery of Hawai‘i into a production that promises to be moving and memorable. A silent auction will open at 4 pm in the Yokouchi Pavilion Courtyard.

These are the best of the festival and proceeds will help fund the 2nd annual AWIFF in Cambodia. This film tells the story of Taylor Camp's eight-year existence on Kaua'i through interviews made 30-years later ... In 1969, thirteen young mainlanders – refugees from campus riots, Vietnam War protests and police brutality– fled to Kaua'i. Before long, this little tribe was arrested and sentenced to 90 days hard labor for having no money and no home. Island resident Howard Taylor, brother of actress Elizabeth, bailed out the group and invited them to camp on his vacant oceanfront land. Howard then left them on their own, without any restrictions, regulations or supervision. Directed by Robert Stone. Short film: Le Petit Nuage

Everest is the inspirational journey of Peace Climbers from different faiths and cultures as they climb to the summit of the tallest mountain in the world. The focus is on Palestinian Ali Bushnaq and Israeli's Dudu Yifrah and Micha Yaniv. They attempt to set aside their differences to create a path of teamwork, friendship and cooperation to the summit of the world’s highest peak. Short film: Dalai Lama Happiness

Kayhan Kalhor, an original member of Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, is an internationally acclaimed virtuoso on the kemancheh. His performances of traditional Persian music with his unique collaborations have attracted audiences around the globe. Kalhor will be performing with the string quartet, Brooklyn Rider. National Public Radio credits Brooklyn Rider with “recreating the 300-year old form of string quartet as a vital and creative 21st century ensemble.” Enjoy an afternoon of uniquely beautiful music.

These are the best of the festival and proceeds will help fund the 2nd annual AWIFF in Cambodia. Brother Number One is a documentary on the torture and murder of New Zealand yachtie Kerry Hamill by the Khmer Rouge in 1978. It follows the journey of Kerry's younger brother, Rob Hamill, an Olympic and Trans-Atlantic champion rower, who travels to Cambodia to retrace the steps taken by his brother and John Dewhirst, speaking to eyewitnesses, perpetrators and survivors. The mission of the ANGKOR WAT INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (AWIFF) is to showcase and celebrate films whose subjects and themes deal with the preservation of culture and environment. These are the best of the festival and proceeds will help fund the 2nd annual AWIFF in Cambodia. Four years in the making, One Day on Earth is a video time capsule of one day, October 10, 2010. More than 19,000 filmmakers, both professional and novice, contributed 3,000 hours of footage. The project, headed by Founder/Director Kyle Ruddick and Co-founder/Executive Producer Brandon Litman, donated video cameras to more than 95 UN country offices, which resulted in unusually intimate access, including footage of remote villages of Papua New Guinea and Abyei, a district of South Sudan with a history of border disputes. Baraka, an ancient Sufi word with forms in many languages, translates as a blessing or as the breath or essence of life from which the evolutionary process unfolds. A poetic tour of the globe, Baraka was shot in breathtaking 70mm in 24 countries on six continents. Set to the life affirming rhythms of varied religious rituals and nature's own raw beat, Baraka is a visualization of the interconnectedness humans share with the earth.
