With Japanese drums at the foundation of its world fusion mix, On Ensemble takes the ancient instruments of taiko into new realms. Infusing the powerful rhythms of ensemble Japanese drumming with elements of hip-hop, rock and electronica, the band's unique sound has been praised as “completely original.” On Ensemble is supported by one of Japan’s most important traditional-culture bearers, Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten, instrument maker to the emperor. His support empowers the four members to utilize authentic, rare Japanese instruments in its fearless exploration of taiko.

With their wide array of musical styles—a notorious urban-Latino collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East L.A. rhythm & blues, Jamaican reggae and Indian raga—the band has always followed a key mantra: taking you around the world by taking you around L.A.

Dala is the Toronto-based duo of Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine who are renowned for their “Lennon and McCartney” like harmonies and original acoustic folk-pop tunes. Amanda’s ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with Sheila’s velvety alto to create their trademark sound. Dala won the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year and have released five albums, including Best Day in 2012. Best Day was nominated for three Canadian Folk Music Awards: English Songwriter of the Year, Vocal Group of the Year and Producer of the Year.

Joshua Nelson & The Kosher Gospel Singers

Raised in a black Jewish community, singer/songwriter Joshua Nelson blends Hebrew texts with soulful African-American gospel music. Critics have hailed Nelson's vocal powers as reminiscent of the legendary Mahalia Jackson, yet utterly original and electrifying. Named "The Next Big Thing" by Oprah Winfrey, Joshua Nelson is a "full-throated, note-bending gospel singer" (New York Times) who exuberantly brings people and cultures together, no matter what their faith. Eddie Robinson, former pianist for Mahalia Jackson, will also be performing.

Zenshin Daiko's 14th Annual Taiko Festival

Zenshin Daiko's annual Taiko Festival concert will open with Taiko Center of the Pacific Youth Group. TCP-YG is the children's group of world-renowned taiko drummer Kenny Endo's school of taiko on O'ahu. Since it was formed in 1994, the group has developed technique and creativity to become one of the top youth taiko ensembles performing worldwide. The second half of the evening features Maui's Zenshin Daiko, who will premiere two exciting pieces: The first is composed by Alyssa Fuchikami for ZD's Intermediate Class. For the second piece, taiko artist Shoji Kameda of On Ensemble was commissioned to write a new work and has been collaborating with ZD's Advanced Class on an innovative and rhythmically challenging piece that will bring down the house!
