One of Hawaiian music’s most gifted vocalists, Martin Pahinui has performed with a host of top artists, including his father’s legendary Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band, The Peter Moon Band, and slack key super group Hui Aloha. As Slack Key Masters’ guest artist, Martin shares his aloha for the traditional sound with classic tunes full of slack key, steel guitar and a passionate voice that expresses the essence of Hawaiian soul and harkens back to the glory days of Hawaiian music greats like his mentors: Gabby Pahinui, Atta Isaacs and Sonny Chillingworth. Martin’s distinctive voice ranges from the tender leo ki‘eki‘e (falsetto) of “Pua Lilia†to the powerful yodels of “Hanohano Hawai‘i.†Join host, George Kahumoku, Jr. for this special edition of Slack Key Masters with kanikapila-style music and storytelling.

Keola Beamer’s reputation as a composer, arranger, guitarist and vocalist continues to achieve new heights with his work as one of the composer-performers on the Oscar-nominated film, The Descendants. The music featured in this once-in-a-lifetime concert is inspired by the nationally televised PBS Hawai‘i special Keola Beamer: MÄlama Ko Aloha (Keep Your Love). Joining Keola on stage are: his dear friend, R. Carlos Nakai, a Native American flutist and nine-time Grammy Award nominee, and jazz pianist virtuoso, Geoffrey Keezer, who has two Grammy Award nominations and has performed across the globe. Keola's wife, Kumu Hula Moanalani Beamer, will grace the stage with chant, dance and Hawaiian percussive instruments.

Haunani Apoliona, Ku‘uipo Kumukahi & Helene Woodward - Songs of Our Ali‘i

Haunani Apoliona (12-string guitar) is a renowned Native Hawaiian leader, Board of Trustees Chair for Office of Hawaiian Affairs and entertainer with the legendary Hawaiian music group Olomana. Ku‘uipo Kumukahi (guitar) has released six Hawaiian music albums and received 10 NÄ HÅkÅ« Hanohano Awards, including two for Female Vocalist of the Year. She was president of the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts, 2008-2012. Helene Woodward plays upright bass, performing with Mahiehie for hÄlau hula for 25 years. She also performed at the Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki with the Islanders for 20 years. Enjoy this one-of-a-kind concert of Songs of Our Ali‘i.

The Hawaiian grand master of stringed instruments, particularly slack key guitar, Led Ka‘apana, returns as Slack Key Masters’ special guest. His extraordinary baritone and ki‘eki‘e (falsetto) voice have made him a musical legend, while his easy-going style and kolohe (rascal) charm have made him a favorite of audiences around the world. Grammy Award winner George Kahumoku, Jr. opens the show with his musical and storytelling talents for a wonderful evening in the traditional kanikapila style.

Kuana Torres Kahele was born on the slopes of Mauna Kea and began composing, arranging and playing traditional Hawaiian music at an early age. In 1995 with Kehau Tamure, Kuana formed the multi-award winning duo, NÄ Palapalai, who earned critical acclaim for reviving Hawaiian classics as well as for original compositions. His highly anticipated solo release, Kaunaloa, excited the hula world and re-ignited passion for Hawaiian music from everyday fans, garnering him multiple NÄ HÅkÅ« Hanohano Awards.

Renowned as one of Hawai‘i’s most popular recording artists, Keali‘i is the award-winning kumu hula of HÄlau Ke‘alaokamaile. His music and chants represent the best of Hawai‘i’s traditional and contemporary poetry today, earning multiple NÄ HÅkÅ« Hanohano Awards in addition to a top spot on world music charts. HÄlau Ke‘alaokamaile has brought home top awards from the prestigious hula competition, Merrie Monarch Festival, and KÅ«kahi is their annual fundraiser at the MACC. Alaka‘i Paleka will be M.C. of this year's program which carries the theme of ‘Ohana.

Raised in true matrilineal tradition of Hawai‘i, the women of the Lindsey ‘ohana, mother Carmen Hulu and daughters Kahulu Maluo and NÄpua Greig, embody Hawaiian music in all its forms. Hulu Lindsey, best known for her rich falsetto styling, has performed worldwide for the past 40 years. Since 1996, Kahulu Maluo has been kumu hula of Maui’s award-winning Halau NÄ Lei Kaumaka O Uka along with her sister. NÄpua Greig has made her own fame as a recording artist with releases, Pihana and Mohalu, which garnered her NÄ HÅkÅ« Hanohano Female Vocalist of the Year awards in 2008 and 2011. Join them for an evening filled with the family’s musical and hula tradition.

Olomana by Moonlight

Taking the name of the windward O‘ahu mountain so much a part of their childhood memories, Olomana blends contemporary and traditional Hawaiian music styles to create a distinctive sound that is deeply rooted in the land, people and culture of Hawai‘i. In 1973, Jerry Santos and Robert Beaumont joined forces and made an indelible mark on the Hawaiian music scene. The duo expanded to include Wally Suenaga on bass and in 1982, Haunani Apoliona joined the Olomana family. Join them for an intimate evening of classic hits like “Ku‘u Home O Kahalu‘u†and music with Aloha.

Jake Shimabukuro is renowned the world over for lightning-fast fingers and revolutionary playing techniques on Hawai‘i’s signature instrument, the ‘ukulele. Jake, who was declared a musical “hero†by Rolling Stone magazine, has earned comparisons to Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis and has performed for the Queen of England. In 2012, he released Grand ‘Ukulele, an ambitious follow-up to 2011’s Peace, Love, ‘Ukulele which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s World charts. Jeff Peterson is recognized as one of Hawai‘i’s most versatile guitarists, who is a sought-after studio musician as well as a popular solo artist. As a performer, Jeff has worked with a wide range of artists from Hawaiian slack key masters to rock and jazz legends to symphony orchestras. He has been featured on Grammy Award winning and nominated records for Hawaiian Music. Nathan Aweau has won three NÄ HÅkÅ« Hanohano Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year, and accompanies his beautiful vocals on guitar. He also demonstrates his extraordinary musicianship on an 8-string electric bass.

University of Hawai‘i Maui College’s Institute of Hawaiian Music and the UHMC Chorus will showcase its Second Annual Student Concert, featuring ‘ukulele, guitar, keyboards and vocals. The IHM students celebrate their graduation and compilation CD release with a special performance of songs from the record and more Hawaiian music. The CD will be available for purchase with an opportunity to meet the artists and get their autographs after the show.

NÄ HÅkÅ« Hou Award Winners Concert

Mark your calendar to celebrate the year's musical "Bests" in Hawai‘i! This 3rd annual concert features winners of the NÄ HÅkÅ« Hanohano Awards, as presented by the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts (HARA). The NÄ HÅkÅ« winners will be announced May 24-25, so The MACC line-up will be announced after that date. None of us know who those winners will be yet (keep fingers crossed for your favorites!) but you can be assured of a wonderful evening of music in the beautiful Yokouchi Pavilion, with both current and previous NÄ HÅkÅ« Hanohano Award-winners.
