Soaring Voices Gala for Exhibit

Soaring Voices international traveling museum exhibition presents the rich and innovative ceramic culture of Japan through the exquisite works of four generations of 25 female artists, working in both sculptural and traditional forms in a field generally dominated by men. This benefit gala will begin with a champagne reception and preopening gallery walk-through with the Soaring Voices exhibition curators and artists from Japan, followed by dinner created by Chef Sheldon Simeon of Old Lāhainā LĆ«â€˜au. Enjoy live entertainment by award-winning recording artist and Kumu Hula Nāpua Makua.
Special Package Admission to All Events = $350/person. The package is available by calling or visiting the Box Office.

Soaring Voices international traveling museum exhibition presents the rich and innovative ceramic culture of Japan through the exquisite works of four generations of 25 female artists, working in both sculptural and traditional forms in a field generally dominated by men. Guest speakers at this day-long symposium are:
Hiroko Miura - Co-curator and curator of the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. Maya Nishi - Co-curator and president of hus-10, Inc. Joan B. Mirviss – A leading expert in Japanese art, specializing in modern and contemporary ceramics, ukiyo-e prints, paintings, and screens. Anne Nishimura Morse – The William and Helen Pounds Senior Curator of Japanese Art, Art of Asia, Oceania, and Africa at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Halsey and Alice North – Leading private collectors of contemporary Japanese ceramics. Their collection has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Japan Society, New York. Jay Jensen - Moderator - Curator of Contemporary Art for the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Soaring Voices Exhibit Artist Lectures & Demonstrations

Soaring Voices international traveling museum exhibition presents the rich and innovative ceramic culture of Japan through the exquisite works of four generations of 25 female artists, working in both sculptural and traditional forms in a field generally dominated by men. In collaboration with University of Hawai‘i Maui College, we offer an opportunity for students and the public to learn more about the techniques and materials of visiting artists from Japan, including Ikuko Ando, Fuku Fukumoto, Chieko Katsumata, Yuriko Matsuda and Etsuko Tashima. Lecture presentations are from 10 am to 12 pm each day at MACC. After lunch in the courtyard, the event moves across the street to UH Maui College campus from 1 to 3 pm for studio demonstrations, followed by a Q&A session.

Created in the spirit of TED, TEDxMaui an independently organized event, licensed by TED. TED stands for technology, entertainment and design, and is a national nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” This daylong event will feature presenters and performers from Maui and beyond who have the passion, curiosity and creativity to change the world with their revolutionary ideas. The final list of presenters for “The Dream is Real” is posted on the TEDxMaui.com website. (see link below) Local presenters include Native Hawaiian waterman Archie Kalepa, Hawaiian master navigator and wayfinder Chad Kalepa Baybayan, musican and protest poet Makana, and WenLu Duffy, 16-year old violinist and composer.

Coffee, tea, iced water and a healthy snack will be provided to ticket-holders along with a boxed lunch. A limited amount of breakfast items will be available for purchase in the courtyard. No-host reception will follow the presentations, 5:30-7:30 pm, with food and drinks available for purchase in the courtyard and live music with special guest musicians.

“Only a forest can make a forest,” says U.S Poet Laureate and two-time Pulitzer prize winner W. S. Merwin. He will read his own work about the evolution of the forest and sustainable ideas. “Through timeless chants, we access the wisdom of the kĆ«puna, and explore their relationship with the forest realm,” says Ulalia Woodside, kumu hula and land planner/manager. She will chant Kau Ka Hāli‘a: A Memory Appears. Author and ecologist Joan Maloof will present tales of her journey to protect America's forests, speaking about “A Path to Beauty: The Ecology of Ancient Forests.” Maui pianist and composer Gene Argel’s first ensemble work with 12 musicians, Alights on a Cloud, will premiere as a composition created for the forest as inspiration and teacher, portraying the musical sound of the forest.

The Rotary Club of Wailuku presents its annual fundraising event – LOBSTERFEST 2013 – a casual affair. A Dixieland band - Phillip Smith and the Gentlemen of Jazz, featuring the vocals of Ellen Belarose - will keep your slippahed feet tapping while you eat the delicious spiced, steamed Lobsters, Dirty Rice with N’Orleans Etouffee, Louisiana Potato Salad and much more. Beverages, including French Quarter Hurricane Cocktails will be available for purchase, and a surprise auction item is up for grabs. Proceeds support the local and global charitable projects of the Rotary Club of Wailuku.
