Mission Statement
The Center’s exhibits program seeks to encourage fresh ways of seeing, thinking and engaging with visual arts and to fulfill a need for inspiration and meaning in our lives.
Goals
We present visual arts from the State of Hawaii and around the world to reflect important issues and ideas of our time. Our primary goal is to support artists in their exploration of new and innovative work. We celebrate the spectrum of human experience by presenting a broad view of culture, places and people. We believe that the arts are essential to the quality of life and education of our community.
The exhibits program incorporates visual arts presentations from the following categories:
Community Proposals

Images: Natural Ground, Linda Kane; Akiko Kotani; Stephen Freedman
In addition to exhibits initiated by the MACC, the gallery accepts proposals from individuals and groups of artists. We encourage artists to use this opportunity to convey contemporary ideas that demonstrate challenge and experimentation through innovative new work. Proposals are accepted each year between August–November. Guidelines and Application can be downloaded from the links on left.
Thematic Invitational Exhibits

Curated by the Center’s Gallery Director and Exhibits Committee, these exhibitions focus on current issues and ideas pertinent to our island and global community. These opportunities help to encourage and advance the careers of artists living in Hawaii.
Traveling Exhibits

Images: The Inspired Line: Select Prints from Albrecht DĂĽrer and Rembrandt van Rijn; The Continuing Line: Artemio Rodriguez
Featuring a diverse selection of contemporary as well as traditional art forms, these exhibits keep our audiences in touch with artistic achievements and international influences from historical periods to present-day.
Retrospectives

These curated exhibits honor the life work and creative achievement of our most distinguished artists from Hawaii as well as national and international artists.
Collaborative Exhibitions

Images: Witness to Time: Edward Bailey; Sam Ka'ai; From Bento to Mixed Plate
Organized in collaboration with other museums, cultural organizations or guest curators, these exhibits allow the MACC to showcase unique and exceptional works of art by sharing resources and expertise.
Juried
These exhibit opportunities offer a competitive forum for artists and a chance to create work that will be showcased with an established level of accomplished artists who actively exhibit their work. Jurors represent a cross-section of visual arts professionals from both Hawaii and beyond.
Schaefer Portrait Challenge

A signature event of Maui Arts & Cultural Center, this triennial juried exhibit encourages participation from artists state-wide, to capture the diversity of our community and chronicle the changing face of Hawaii through portraiture. Two cash prizes are affiliated with this prestigious exhibition which started in 2003.
