KAHEKILI

Kumu Hula Hōkūlani Holt and her hālau Pa'u O Hi'iaka, together with nā Kumu Hula Keali'i Reichel and Pali Ahue, reconstructed her original hula drama, Kahekili, which takes the audience into pre-contact Hawai'i through chant, Hawaiian martial arts, kahiko (traditional hula), and dramatic narration.

Kahekili was made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of the American Masterpieces: Dance initiative, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts.
Additional support for 2008-09 season by Hawai‘i Tourism Authority/CNHA and The Charles Engelhard Foundation. Supported in part by National Endowment for the Arts, State Foundation for Culture and the Arts, County of Maui, Cole Family Foundation, Jimmy & Honey Bun Haynes and KPOA Radio.

Kulanihako‘i: Living Waters is a new hula drama by Na Kinimakalehua, a collaborative artistic team composed of master kumu hula Hokulani Holt, Keali‘i Reichel and Pali Ahue, along with Ulalia Woodside, Kauhilonohonua Padilla and Robert Ke‘ano Ka‘upu. Drawing from epic Hawaiian myths over 2000 years old, the mystical Kulanihako‘i is an elemental lake from which all life flows. With dance, chant, storytelling and dramatic interpretation, Living Waters depicts the many facets of water and its continuous relationship between the ocean, land and sky as told through the eyes of contemporary Native Hawaiians.
