Masks are usually thought of as something that hide and conceal. For Faustwork Mask Theatre founder Rob Faust, the opposite is true: masks are magical objects that have the power to transform.

He creates characters based on explorations in the Art of the Mask, perfectly matched with precise body movements to create vignettes that delight audiences of all ages with a unique synthesis of theatre, physical comedy, music, dance, and poetry.

“The Mask Messenger” is physical theatre and comedy in the guise of a lecture/demonstration about masks. The show brims with wisdom and insight, even though at times audiences are laughing too. Spoken word and body language combine seamlessly.

A menagerie of characters unmasks the folly humans encounter when they act as if life were simple and appearances were not deceiving. In vignettes ranging from comic to poignant to bizarre, the show includes expressive silent masks brought to life with outrageous physicality; comic characters who speak from behind half-masks; and exotic creatures created by masks worn other parts of the body.

"Stunning, undefinable... somewhere between the sculptural fantasies of Mummenschanz and the precision mime of Marcel Marceau." - Montreal Gazette
