In this new MACC concert series, two artists talk-story, play music, and have fun! Each concert will feature Henry Kapono and a different guest artist in an intimate format that offers the audience a rare opportunity to get up-close and personal. The artists will share music and stories from their careers and answer questions, giving the audience an up-close-and-personal seat at the jam session. This concert features Malani Bilyeu of Kalapana who will be accompanied by Sean Na'auao and Alden Levi.

Henry Kapono is a performer who has it all – vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, composer, thrilling performer, audience favorite—and multiple honors and awards, including a Grammy nomination. He has taken home numerous Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and Album & Rock Album of the Year.

In 1973, childhood friends Carl James, Malani Bilyeu & David John (DJ) Pratt got together in DJ's grandfather's garage with Bryant Mackey Feary. They named themselves Kalapana, playing their first gig at Chuck's in Hawaii Kai. They quickly became a regular band and opened concerts for Earth, Wind & Fire, The Moody Blues, Sly & The Family Stone, and Cecilio & Kapono. They released their first, self-titled album, Kalapana in 1973. Today, with 18 albums under their belt, a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 and decades of popularity in Hawai‘i, the west coast, Japan and the Pacific, Kalapana still performs and tours extensively.

The Grammy Museum exhibit is the genesis of this “Artist 2 Artist” concert series, created and hosted by Henry Kapono and featuring Keola Beamer, Jerry Santos, and Malani Bilyeu, iconic Hawaiian artists performing their hit songs that have become local anthems and the soundtrack for many growing up in Hawai‘i. Henry Kapono talks one-on-one with his guests about their careers, followed by an intimate jam session and concert you don’t want to miss!
