Ko‘olau: A True Story of Kaua‘i
Puppet Theater by Tom Lee
Castle Theater, 5 pm
In Ko’olau, Hawai‘i-born writer and director, Tom Lee, boldly tells a now-legendary story of Hawai'i in the 1890s through an intimate and inventive puppet performance. The title character, Kaluaiko'olau (hereafter Ko'olau), hides with his wife and son in the Kalalau Valley of Kaua‘i as he tries to elude the sheriff's men and escape deportation to a leper colony. The story captures both a fundamental struggle for personal freedom and the triumph of unconditional love in the most difficult circumstances. Tom Lee addresses these powerful themes with puppetry that evokes the poetry of the Hawaiian language and the natural environment of the islands. His production utilizes raw, handcarved puppets in the kuruma ningyo style (wheeled puppet theater of Japan) and live shadow and video projection inspired by Hawaiian woodcut carving, along with voice-over and original live musical accompaniment. Recommended for ages 13 and older. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Performing Arts Presenters of Hawaii.

Michael McDonald & Boz Scaggs
Events Lawn, 7 pm
Two Legendary Voices, One Stellar Evening: Michael McDonald together with Boz Scaggs.
Five-time Grammy Award winner Michael McDonald’s legendary voice has been a fixture in American pop music for three decades. His singing style successfully found middle ground between soul and rock with songs like Yah Mo B There and On My Own. When Michael joined the Doobie Brothers, his voice became the group’s focal point on such songs as Takin’ It to the Streets, Minute by Minute and the number one single, What a Fool Believes, which he co-wrote with Kenny Loggins. McDonald’s latest album, “Soul Speak” is a follow-up to his two smash explorations of the Motown Records’ songbook and includes three original songs as well as a selection of songs that Michael loves.
Soulful singer-songwriter Boz Scaggs gained considerable success as a solo artist in the 70s. “Silk Degrees” became one of the landmark pop albums of that decade, selling more than four million copies, and hit the top of the Billboard charts with hit songs Georgia, What Can I Say, Lido Shuffle, and Grammy Award-winning song, Lowdown. Scaggs’ most recent album “Speak Low” is a romantic album that embodies all that is Scaggs: his smooth sound and sublime melodies combined with a silky voice thick in the shadows add an emotional dimension to this album unlike any other.
A Tom Moffatt production.

Maui Pops Orchestra Presents
Orchestral Solos
Castle Theater, 3:30 pm
Join the Maui Pops Orchestra for an afternoon of exciting Orchestral Solos, a dynamic program highlighting musical works that include exceptional solo parts for various instruments. The focus of this concert is centered around two major works, including Bolero, Ravel’s most famous orchestral piece based on the Spanish dance of the same name, and Capriccio Espagnol by Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov, which is based on Spanish folk tunes. The repetitive rhythm in the snare drum and solo that is passed from instrument to instrument make Bolero a favorite world-wide. Capriccio Espagnol features several difficult instrumental solos, including the violin (concertmaster) and harp — you won’t want to miss this fiery score.
