Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2022

Maui Arts & Cultural Center is pleased to announce a call to artists for the Schaefer Portrait Challenge 2022. This statewide juried exhibition has been held as a triennial since 2003, and continues to present the unique diversity of the people of our islands, represented through explorations in portraiture.

The Challenge carries two substantial cash awards. The Jurors' Choice Award for $15,000, is sponsored by Carolyn Schaefer.  The Gene & Ruth Freedman People’s Choice Award for $5,000, based on the popular vote of gallery visitors, is sponsored by the Eugene and Ruth Freedman Family Foundation. 

The jurors will be:

Carl Jennings, associate professor, arts and humanities, Kapiolani Community College,O'ahu

Codie King, director at Wailoa Center, Hawai'i Island

Jan Sato, art teacher at Baldwin High School, Maui
